Mi madre Yemaya is an oil pastel piece that was inspired by the fact that I really wanted to capture her in full color. The piece was done in this manner to allow whoever is viewing it to come to their own conclusion on how Yemaya is being formed. In the bottom, right, you can see that bubbles are foaming. I wanted to appear as though Yemaya was being created by the bubbles. I have her placed in a way to make it seem like she is resting on top of the rocks and coral under the sea. In the background, there is a sunken slave ship. Yemaya is said to be the mother and guide to all of the Africans that lost their lives during the Salve trade era.
In the top is the surface. The slight outline was a happy accident and makes it appear as though Yemaya is a giant being, coming from the surface or slowly foaming from it as well.
I give details in my voice recording. I highly recommend listening to it! Thank you!
