The Laundress is a classic subject for 19th century painters, but I wanted to make an updated version. It's based on my drawing from a live model. I loved the shadows she cast on the wall behind her, and how she held the basket on her hip.
Though she was nude when I sketched her, for this woodblock she wears white undies and a sleeveless shirt. It's printed on masa paper, a bright white Japanese paper thin enough to print by hand with a baren. The wood grain and rough carving marks add texture and energy. The bright green basket was colored using pochoir, a fancy French term for stenciling.
