Reddish egrets often dance and jump as they hunt in shallow water. In this woodblock portrait, their lively ways are suggested by loose carving and woodgrain textures. It was printed hand in my St Petersburg studio, from two blocks in multiple colors, on dark brown Awagami paper. The species name and alpha code were carved into the background block. This white form of the usually reddish bird is sometimes seen at Fort DeSoto Park.
