Whimbrels are large shorebirds with a global distribution. This print highlights their long bill, facial stripe and subtle speckled markings. Sunset colors create a colorful backdrop, lighting up the bay at low tide. The scene depicts how I see whimbrels near my studio, wintering on mud flats of Tampa Bay. The bird's scientific names (genus and the subspecies we see here in Florida) and alpha code are carved into the clouds above.
This is part of a series of woodcut print portraits of large birds. My prints are drawn and carved by me, and hand-pulled here in my Florida studio. Three blocks are printed multiple times in several transparent colors. Woodgrain and carving marks add texture and energy.
