Family Histories for Digital Prints
Lost and Found White Admiral First Red
It is important to me that the figures in this work are generic, frontal and immobile, as they function as archetypes, while their environment shifts and transforms. As the figures change size, color and importance in the different prints, they evoke communal memories of thoughts, places and individuals across country, race and physical demarcation. This practice allows me to explore identity as I depict the self in different psychological states, various surroundings, even at different ages and genders.
My prints with their layers of scanned documents and appropriations as well and digital painting, reflect my personal history as well as my process as an artist. The figures function as icons of the self and as abstract shapes that can mime the presence of trees in a landscape. It is significant that the adults are female: a mother in relationship to the children, who embodies my private narratives.
