During my childhood doctor's visits I would get a complete blood count, or a CBC. When I would see the nurse to draw my blood, I recall her telling me that the butterfly needles she used would help to make the blood come out for the test. Later, when the results would come in, she would go over my counts with me to show me how I was getting better.
I made paper butterflies to express the fantasy of imagining the needles as beautiful butterflies rather than scary needles. The nurses' gloved hands are created with white vinyl that's been stained over with alcohol inks to emphasize the plastic barrier for hygiene that is so important with immunocompromised patients. In my hands I hold a blooming calamondin flower to infer my mother's presence at the appointment, and for the floor, or background, I created a fanciful floral design. Both floral motifs show my life as blooming, thanks to the butterflies, treatments, my mother and the nurse.
