Information

This is not a drawing or painting but rather a scratchboard. This piece, "Hopeless", depicts a Sudanese refugee child. The conflict in Sudan has had a profound impact on its people. Starvation is rampant. I strived for a minimalist image to force viewers to draw attention to the child's emaciated condition. In the past, viewers have told me that seeing this piece brought them to tears. It's a very powerful image. Technique wise, I used mostly sandpaper to scratch this image. Usually, my tools consist of a craft knife blade or a scalpel. The scratchboard panel is covered with a thin layer of white clay with a top coat of black ink. By scratching various patterns of lines or dots, the white clay is revealed to form the image. In this case, I wanted a less defined and rougher image. The sandpaper enabled me to get that effect. I added translucent ink for a spot of color on the bowl.
