Globally, grandparents often serve as surrogate parents for their grandchildren, usually in response to family crises and other sociopolitical issues (e.g., poverty, war, disease epidemics, and urban migration). Grandparents raising grandchildren are primarily responsible for all aspects of their grandchildren's care, even when the Grandparent themselves has extenuating health issues. This can cause financial and extra health strains on the Grandparents.
Growing up in economically unsound conditions, my Grandparents often became the primary caretaker of my siblings and I. My Grandma battle stage 4 Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma while working so that she could provide and care for us full time. Such a powerful woman.
In this drawing I depict the complacency of the child who has not yet understood the abondment if her father. The Grandma cries and hurts from the pain her Grandchild feels.
