Fish on a plate is a classic still life subject for painters, and I was inspired to make this woodblock by an early Dali painting of a fish dinner. The print was created from four different blocks: black and orange from a wood panel, linoleum for other colors. While it was still wet and sticky, the final ink layer on the fish was dusted with powdered mica for a subtle shimmery effect.
The fish itself is based on my drawing of a beautiful queen snapper purchased whole and fresh from Gulf Coast Seafood Market in Gulfport.
