This piece is not a drawing or painting. It's a unique medium that dates back to 19th Century Europe, called scratchboard. The 1/8 inch hard panel is coated with a thin layer of a special white clay and a topcoat of black ink. I use mainly scalpels and tattoo needles to scratch hundreds of small lines and dots in various patterns to create these images. It's an unforgiving medium because there is no erasing a mistake. Artists consider scratchboard one of the most difficult mediums.
Motley Crue's song of the same name inspired this piece. She's a tough metal girl. The tattoo is similar to one that Crue's founding guitarist Mick Mars has. She's wearing a Crue tank top. There are some Crue references on the shirt. Can you pick them out? Symbol from their "Shout at the Devil" album. Also, names of the songs on this album are written under the band's name. I love doing pieces like this that are mostly black and white but have a hint of color to highlight certain parts of the image. The actual size of the scratchboard is 5x7" but I framed it in an oversized matte and black frame. Right now it hangs in my guitar room above my collection of Fender and Gibson electrics.
