It is ironic that a flag which warns of the consequences of governmental oppression has been embraced by Florida political leaders who, by removing the lessons of black history from public school classrooms, are also seeking to prevent children from learning the consequences of oppressing an entire community.
I loathe the trope of the fragile trans person. I'm convinced that this perception is a major reason the Florida legislature singled us out for discriminatory laws intended only to intimidate, shame, and humiliate us. Our strength, however, lies in the undisputed fact that these laws are not a response to the fact that we have transitioned--they are a response to the fact that we can transition, yet still receive the love and support of our communities.
I am grateful for the invaluable guidance, input, and assistance of Melissa Rogolino in making this piece a reality.
