In 2015 a bronze Baphomet was forged in central Florida as a commissioned work for the Church of Satan. Twenty years earlier the glass exterior of a building in Clearwater gave the world a prolonged glimpse of the Blessed Mother. The symbolism of each separately could not be more divergent, yet they converge here. This thin stretch of land has always been akin to a line between good and evil with its gentle, angelic springtimes, demonic hurricanes and hellish heat of late summer. Florida's cardinal conflict has always been moral and they are omnipresent. As mentioned earlier, a 20 x 60 foot discoloration resembling Raphael's "Madonna and Child with a Book" à la Peter Max appeared on a glass office building in Clearwater. The owner of the building and 500,000 inspired pilgrims believed it was sacrum fenestra until Our Lady of Clearwater fell at the idle hands of a teenager with a slingshot. The saintly town of St. Petersburg was named in honor of the Russian city formerly known as Leningrad. This is a verdant and richly storied state "discovered" on Palm Sunday by Ponce de Leon, yet to most Americans it is typified by lawless, shirtless wonders born and bred in Pasco County. Florida is the national grist mill creating endless fodder for the battle between good and evil, if not just the Live PD kind. Behold the mark of the land of flowers, mega-churches, mega-shooters, mega-statues, and Florida Man. Florida, the land that binds them together.
