This is an original one of a kind scratchboard artwork. The scratchboard panel is a 1/8" thick board coated with a special white clay and a topcoat of black India ink. I used a scalpel to scratch off the ink in various patterns to expose patterns and tones of white clay to create the image. I added color with translucent ink and re-scratched over the ink for texture, repeating this sequence several times.
Red Pandas are an endangered species. They are not related to the bigger black and white pandas that we're familiar with. These Red Pandas have a lot of personality! They're found in the Himalayas and southwestern China. They're not very big. The head to body length is 20-25" and the tail adds on another 11-19". They weigh around 33 lbs. They are victims of illegal poaching and trade as well as habitat loss. When two Red Pandas approach each other and feel threatened, they will stand on their hind legs, raise both forelimbs above their heads, and stare at each other. It almost appears as if they are greeting each other but they're not! This is the posture they take just prior to lunging and swiping with their paws. I researched numerous images to learn more about them and this one with the tongue sticking out seemed to capture their personality. They are adorable to look at. Disney actually made a movie about them called, "Turning Red."
