This is not a photo or painting but rather a scratchboard piece. It depicts a boy whose parents were killed in the Korean War, leaving him on the streets as a war orphan. He's nibbling on small pieces of bread. His clothes consist of rags pieced together. I saw many war orphans during my time in Sarajevo following Bosnia's civil war. I visited an orphanage that was bombed during the war. The children in there all lost their parents in the genocide. That experience served as my inspiration for this piece.
Normally on a scratchboard I use a scalpel and a few other sharp tools to scratch the ink off the scratchboard panel. I actually used the corner of some fine grit sandpaper to do this piece. The eyes and bread are the only parts I used the tip of a craft knife. I rubbed the sandpaper on the ink and wiped it with some tissue to smear the ink dust. It's the most unique scratchboard in my portfolio.
