Artist Statement

I am fascinated by the mechanics of consciousness and the processes that create the forms we experience in this reality. The mind's ability to interpret the same stimulus in different ways is of particular interest to me. My abstract paintings embody this interest as meditations on planes of existence larger or smaller than we perceive. In these works, I use transparent layers of color interacting with one another until a pattern emerges or everything reaches a singularity. I will also start with thin lines building to tones using automatic drawing techniques, adding color later as the piece requires. I use a similar approach when painting figuratively, favoring impression, action, and emotion over objective or photographic representation.
While my painting style typically involves freedom through spontaneity, non-thinking and experimentation, printmaking provides me with a more structured environment where the process is the vehicle for expression. Printmaking engages my love for procedure and allows me to focus on technique and control. I prefer to use relief, monotype, and intaglio processes in congruence as my preferred means of image creation in this discipline.
I have always held a profound love for the early 20th century modern art movements for their iconoclasm and desire to break new ground and I attempt to incorporate those discoveries in my own work. I believe in art as a powerful tool for representing the outer world as well as the inner one. I use this expression to better understand my own experience and neurochemistry.

Biography

I have made art my entire life. I formally studied at Indiana University, where I received a B.A. in Studio Art. I fell in love with printmaking during this time as I favored process over product. Printmaking spoke to me for its exploratory nature, procedural approach, and deep tradition. Upon graduation, I sought to be involved with various community projects around my hometown of Columbus, Indiana, working with the local area Arts Council and VSA of Indiana to organize several printmaking workshops for students with disabilities.
My collaboration with VSA led to a career in disability services and special education over the past 10 years. My current role is running a fine arts studio for adults with disabilities in the Tampa area. Through this work, I have found a wonderful blend of creative fulfillment and community service. The work completes itself.
