Kelly Shaurette is an emerging artist that lives in the Tampa Bay Florida area.
Growing up roaming mangrove forests and exploring our Florida waters, my artwork weaves together botanicals, coral, shells, and sealife. I begin each painting with no preconceived notion, allowing the painting to speak for itself. I intuitively build abstract layers of acrylic paint and ink, allowing the water in the paint to flow and move through my paintbrush, fingers, and other mark making tools. I work in the negative space, pushing the subject closer to the viewer using bright, vivid colors. I sense movement and unity in how the paint moves around the substrate and create an abstract composition. Later I discover shapes in the canvas that inspire me to fill the negative space and develop detail in the painting subject to tell the story of a connected tropical life. I enjoy playing with color and texture inspired by nature and how I feel connected to the environment.
The branches of the trees, coral, and botanicals represent a form of connectiveness and unity.
A native Floridian, Kelly Shaurette grew up offshore fishing and exploring the reefs and turquoise waters of her Florida home. Kelly watched her mother paint for 30 years before trying the process herself, studying first with her mother's own watercolor teacher. After studying under many talented artists, Kelly eventually found an online intuitive painting community, Kelly forged her own style and perspective based on watching how paint moved, flowed, and metamorphized on the canvas. Enchanted by the way a canvas can take on a life of its own, Kelly regards each painting as its own entity. She collaborates with it to reflect her Florida home, creating imagery depicting reefs, wildlife, trees, coral, and sea life with a modern and intuitive twist. This is no cliché beach art, this is steeped from a lifetime spent walking the mangroves, traveling across the waters, and immersing in the nature around her. Kelly continues to follow her instincts while making paintings, seeing where the adventure takes her next.
