Biography

Artist Bio:

All of my life I tried to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up.
I was pretty sure I had found myself, in my late forties, when I became an estate gardener. I planted and pruned to my heart's content until I couldn't. My body had other plans. Crap, now what do I do?

Now in my fifties, a chance meeting with a Florentine sculptor (that's another story) convinced me to trade in my shovel for a paintbrush and receive a classical education in oil painting. That eventually led me to teaching at the atelier on the north shore of Long Island. Wow, I am grown up, I know who I am, I figured it out. Whew.

Fast forward to my sixties. I'm now living in Florida. HOW THE HELL DID THAT HAPPEN? What do I do now? I don't want to paint sunsets and palm trees. Who am I?

Another chance meeting and I am sipping wine and creating a mosaic out of pottery shards. Pretty cool.
I head to NYC and see the mosaics on the 2nd Ave Subway. Glass Mosaics. Bingo.

The rest is history. I bought pounds and pounds of stained glass shards from other artists, a box of bandaids, cleared a space in the garage and taught myself how to work in glass. I will always love putting brush to canvas but I have lost myself in the ever changing color of glass and mosaic and have found my heart.

I have grown up. My name is Donna Grossman and I am a mosaic artist.
