Marie Hammer - Artist's Statement
My wooden faces are constructed from found objects and branches, scraps of oak shipping palettes, toys and small carvings, driftwood, and leftover pieces from the wooden dogs my husband Rusty makes. I glue and screw pieces together to form expressive faces to hang on a wall.
I have been painting human and animal faces since I was a child the wood is my breakaway from two dimensions.
MARIE HAMMER
My art was first publicly exhibited in a UNICEF poster contest at the World's Fair in Brussels, Belgium, when I was nine years old. Early in life I learned color theory and composition from my mother; then continued my education at University of the Arts in Philadelphia. I like to travel as often and as far as possible, with paint stashed in my suitcase, and art venues on the agenda. I have taught painting, drawing and crafts to adults and children.
My style of acrylic painting combines representational and abstract, with influences ranging from ancient cave art experienced in Peche Merle, France, to Danish artists of the COBRA movement. My abstract series feature an interaction of forms, color and movement. In the representational area, I prefer painting animals horses, panthers, bears, crows. Later I began using repurposed wood as a medium for making masks, both human and animal faces.
