Artist Statement

In a time when we are at risk of losing emotional connection to each other and the differences that make us unique seem to be wielding us further apart, art can bring us closer together. The purpose of my artwork is to make a connection directly to your soul, to make emotions available when words fail. What is art if it has no social, emotional or cultural impact on a person or in a society?

Biography

Andrea Facusse is a Honduran self-taught, mixed-media artist. Each artwork is inspired from her multicultural background and her home growing up. Andrea's artwork may not follow a specific path, a repetitive print, or represent the same subject matter as it did in previous artworks. This is because Andrea's artwork is spontaneous, instinctive, and unplanned. To Andrea, artistry is meditation that allows her to connect beyond the social pressures of the world. In order to paint this way, she needs to be open and very receptive of her environment and those around her.

Andrea is an intuitive painter, she doesn't map out what she'll paint. It is more of being in the moment, in tune with herself and the environment. The themes of her paintings are about the invisible connection between humans and nature. The rhythmic markings on the canvas represent the variation of plants and flowers, rain and flowing water, and other objects found in nature. The intense hues of color invites the spectator to project their emotions on the narrative presented before them. The movement, colorful background and composition puts everything into perspective and brings the painting to life.

Andrea started her career as an artist in 2010. She received a B.A. in International Business and got a minor in Art Studio back in 2006. This art studio minor was focused more on perspective and figure drawing. No paint, no color; just paper, pencil, charcoal, and eraser. Andrea later taught herself to paint using acrylics. Later, in 2010 she began taking lessons from a few renowned artists willing to pass down their knowledge of art. These lessons have been very useful in learning the various techniques, learning about color mixing, learning about oils and their mediums, and more importantly learning to trust the process and her intuition.

Andrea's art didn't start abstract; this has definitely been a journey. Andrea began doing figurative art, landscapes, and still life and became used to the lines defining the shapes in her work. The abstract markings and backgrounds have been integrated slowly into her newer works. Andrea says, for her, painting in a more abstract style has been harder than painting figures and landscapes. Abstract art is about decomposing, restructuring, and about abandoning formal elements and shapes. Andrea has been able to keep some of the composed figures in her more abstract works to create a bridge between two worlds: figurative and abstract. These two can coexist to create a work full of gratification and mystery. In the end, what she strives for is to connect to her audience and their experiences using vivacious colors, abstract compositions, and a narrative they can relate to.

Andrea has exhibited her artwork with Boca Raton Museum of Art School, The Sugar Sand Park Gallery, The Arts Warehouse, ArtsUnited at the Arts Warehouse, and The Marshall Family Foundation Gallery at Arts Garage. Andrea has a permanent collection at The Arts Warehouse in Delray Beach, Florida.
