Artist Statement

My art vacillates between figurative and non-objective abstraction. The common thread through all of my paintings is an expressionist quality. Often my figurative work can be viewed as narrative, as in the "Joyous Pursuit." When I am painting, I play around initially with the paint and various mark making tools. At a certain point, it becomes apparent that the canvas is leading me in a direction. It is at that point that I make deliberate decisions, editing, adding color, etc. This occurs whether I am painting in a figurative or abstract way.

Biography

I am a professional artist residing and working in Sarasota, Florida. Originally from Maryland, I graduated with a degree in Art Education, taught elementary art, and volunteered at the Baltimore Museum of Art as a docent. I studied with and was mentored by the late Gladys Goldstein, an esteemed abstract painter and teacher. After moving to Sarasota twenty years ago, I became active in Women Contemporary Artists. I was invited into the historical women professional painters group Petticoat Painters. I maintain a studio near downtown Sarasota. My work is in private and public collections including Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, Kaizen Total Wellness and internationally the United States Embassy in Manilla. Awards locally and nationally include Second Place, "Places and Process," Women's Caucus of Art, San Diego, and First Place, FLorida Artists Group, Area III, Sanibel Island. I have been in many group and several solo exhibitions over the years.
