JoAnne Crowson
Artist Statement
I am an abstract/impressionist artist whose work draws inspiration from the world around me, from the grassy plains of the mid-west, where I grew up, to the calm seas and lush fauna of Florida, where I now reside.
My work shows my passion for vivid colors, which I use to transport the viewer into the piece and evoke an emotional response. Color is a very powerful tool. My abstract representation of our world sometimes takes artistic license with the color palette Mother Nature provided as I tend to see color with great intensity.
Most of my work is created using acrylics and adding texture to the canvas, although I also enjoy creating pieces in resin or alcohol ink. One of the joys I discovered is there are so many ways to create a beautiful piece. Sometimes the most satisfying piece is one that incorporates several different mediums, which is why you may see hints of acrylics, pastel, alcohol ink, and resin all within a single piece. As a self-taught intuitive artist, I am often asking myself, 'I wonder what would happen if I just try ...." This approach has produced many happy surprises which I have learned to apply to future projects.
I begin my process with a plan for the painting and music playing in my studio. But then as an intuitive artist, I allow the painting to lead me to the final result. I have learned if I listen to the painting as she will guide me. I have also learned the music playing while I am creating has a direct correlation to the final feel of the piece. For me, music and art go hand in hand. When viewing my pieces, one can almost guess if it was classical, reggae, or hard rock playing when
JoAnne Crowson
Artist Biography
JoAnne Crowson spent much of her life in the mid-west, from the plains of Illinois to the lakes in Minnesota and Wisconsin, prior to relocating to Florida several years ago. Throughout most of her life, JoAnne did not see herself as a creative person. She worked in the world of computers with her creative side only being allowed to be seen when designing websites. Once she retired, she unleashed the built-up creativeness by teaching herself to paint.
She has always been drawn to the vast expanses of the prairie, the beauty, and the excitement of the waters of Lake Michigan, where she and her husband often could be found boating from Wisconsin to Michigan, and most recently the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. This love of water can be seen in her impressionistic seascapes and her vivid abstracts featuring blues and turquoise as her color pallet.
In September of 2021, JoAnne worked up the courage to submit her work to the COCO Art Gallery in Estero, FL where she was accepted as a regular art contributor at both the Estero and Naples, FL gallery locations. She continues to be an avid contributor to the galleries.
If one would ask JoAnne why she paints, she would reply "I paint because it gives me great satisfaction and purpose. Everyone needs a purpose in their life."
