"Confronting My Demons" is an exploration into understanding the self. The subconscious mind is encumbered by additive baggage that accumulates over the course of one's lifetime and is inherent in the genome passed down through generations. Our behaviors are influenced by forces not always under our control. The cultures we are born into have developed a shared collective unconscious through all the powerful and subliminal imagery we have accumulated in our mental landscape over a lifetime. This piece is a journey traveling through that mental landscape in search of self empowerment. This piece is on Arches 156lb. cold press watercolor paper, using transparent watercolor and casein.
My work is content-driven and narrative. I use "avatars" that I create out of the personal belongings of those I'm depicting to tell stories of personal relationships & of ancestral history. Although the avatar representatives are personally known to me, my intention is that they are universal so that the imagery may spark the viewer to self-reflect on the work and apply these avatar representatives to their own search for self-knowledge. The characters are intended to provoke empathy and insight into the viewers own mental landscape. It is an ongoing, ever-changing journey, venturing into the subconscious mind in search of self-understanding.
