From the vibrant hues of a sunset to the intricate patterns on a butterfly’s wings, I am captivated by the sheer beauty of nature. Driven by my mother’s words from my early childhood, and led by my own intuition, I let the painting talk to me as I create. Each piece slowly comes to life as I add layers, creating my own language with bright color, expressive marks, patterns, and embellishment. When the time is right, a subject emerges that speaks to me – mostly scenes of wildlife, flora, and fauna. My focus then remains on the subject, strategically incorporating it into the background as I develop the final composition in a style I call pixelation.
At the heart of everything I make is the mission to protect and treat all creatures with dignity. Driven by my experiences, I am deeply passionate about animal rights and feel it is my duty to give a voice to those who cannot advocate for themselves. I aim to add beauty into a world that is not always kind and fair, especially to vulnerable populations.
I make work using a vibrant range of color, as I believe that the world is a more bountiful place with a full spectrum represented. The energy created by the hum of colors dancing across the canvas makes me feel alive, and my hope is that it stirs something in every viewer, too.
Rebecca Hallstrom (b. 1951 Puget Sound, WA, USA) captures the beauty of nature in
her mixed media paintings to highlight that there is beauty all around us if we tune into
the world with more intention. She approaches each piece with curiosity first, employing
her intuition to develop the base layers, and researches the subject to finish each piece
with accuracy and finishing with a touch of whimsy, allowing each creature their moment
to shine.
Hallstrom earned her BA in window design from Bassist College in Portland, Oregon.
She has exhibited her artwork at the Five Deuces Galleria in St. Petersburg, Florida; at
the Professional Association of Visual Artists’ (PAVA) COOL Art Show; and at the
Stirling Art Center in Dunedin, Florida, where she earned numerous special awards.
Hallstrom serves as Art Exhibit Coordinator for the Rotary Centennial Nature Center art
program in Honeymoon Island State Park, Dunedin, Florida, where she curates
exhibitions that showcase local talents dedicated to the preservation of the area’s
precious natural resources. She has served as a judge for the Pastel Society of Tampa
Bay Plein Air events and in 2023 delivered an art talk at Five Deuces Galleria in St.
Petersburg, Florida.
Hallstrom currently lives and works in the Tampa Bay area of Florida.
