Artist Statement

Art has been a constant companion throughout my life, a steadfast presence that has guided me through the ups and downs of my tumultuous journey. From my early years, I found solace in self-expression, adorning walls with collages and filling sketchbooks with drawings. Today, these foundational experiences continue to shape my artistic endeavors, as collages often provide a backdrop for my paintings and ink renderings. While the surface of my work may convey a concise narrative, those who venture deeper will uncover a rich tapestry of stories woven within each piece.

One of the joys of my artistic journey is the exploration of diverse mediums. Over time, my creative process has evolved, moving beyond creating for aesthetics alone. Each piece is meticulously conceived, taking form in the recesses of my mind before my brush ever touches the canvas. I embark on thematic explorations that span the personal and political, the comical and cultural. Above all, my art is an introspection into my own life, serving as both a reflection and refuge. The works that resonate most deeply merge these aspects, forging a harmonious connection with viewers.

Biography

Will Shields is a mixed media artist and the founder of the nonprofit Kicks for a Cause (KFACTampa.org) whose life is a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit. Residing in Tampa, FL, Will's journey has been one of triumph over adversity and a celebration of the boundless power of creativity.

From a young age, Will experienced the harsh realities of abandonment, neglect, and all forms of abuse. Growing up in neighborhoods plagued by gangs and violence, he witnessed firsthand the struggles and hardships that surrounded him. Each battle fought within the confines of his home and on the unforgiving streets etched a story onto his soul. The loss of loved ones to the devastation caused by drunk driving, AIDS, cancer, and Alzheimer's added to the weight he carried.

Yet, in the face of life's storms, Will discovered an incredible inner strength. His path has been marked by sleepless nights, the heavy fog of depression, the fiery waves of anger, and the haunting echoes of post-traumatic stress disorder. But within the sanctuary of art, he found solace a sacred space where he could give voice to his emotions and transform his pain into something beautiful. While his formal education in Graphic Design at St. Petersburg College provided a foundation, it is his self-taught journey in the realm of fine art that truly set his creative spirit free.

Will's art is an embodiment of resilience, a testament to the human capacity to endure and overcome. His mixed media works are a tapestry woven with diverse mediums, textures, and colors each stroke revealing a fragment of his journey. They speak directly to the essence of the human experience, forging an emotional connection that resonates deeply with viewers.

From local showcases like Nude Nite Tampa and the Glazer Children's Museum to prestigious venues such as the Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and even TEDActive in Alberta, Canada, his creations have touched lives with their authenticity and vulnerability.

Yet, behind every brushstroke lies a source of unwavering support and love Alisha, Will's incredible wife and high-school sweetheart. She has been his guiding light, offering steadfast support through every twist and turn of his artistic journey. Together, they embrace the joys and challenges of raising their precious daughter, Rylie, whose infectious laughter and innocent wonder bring an immeasurable amount of joy and inspiration.
