This piece is an homage to Artemisia Gentileschi's "Lucretia". The story of Lucretia has been depicted in many famous artworks over time and I wanted to bring this story into the modern age. Lucretia was an ancient Roman noblewoman. She was raped by Sextus Tarquinius, an Etruscan king's son, and committed suicide because of it. Her death caused the start of the rebellion that overthrew the Roman government, switching it from a kingdom to a republic.
"Self Portrait in Homage to Artemisia Gentileschi" is a modern reconceptualization of Lucretia's story. As a young person I had to overcome many similar obstacles and I created this piece to be the representation of the death of myself. I have grown in self-love and gender identity since creating this piece and I truly believe this piece was the cathartic release I needed to truly accept myself as a nonbinary person. I may have killed myself in this work of art, but a death was needed for me to realize my true identity.
