My "mujer" has suffered the loss of family members and friends from COVID. She has worn the veil of sadness and separated herself from the outside world and denied herself feelings of positivity and joy. Her lace mantilla is anchored by a black peineta (comb), but is lifted by colorful flowers. Raising the mantilla also represents the removal of protective masks that hinder our communications and block the free enjoyment of the outside world. Blue birds fly above her head, and cardinals land on her shoulders to welcome the reemergence of joy in her life. Ladybugs land on her lifted veil in memory of her lost loved ones and are omens of hope for a brighter post-pandemic future.
