Edgar Allen Poe is my favorite writer for his gothic writing style, powerful imagery, and methodology of telling stories. I wanted to depict Poe in one of his iconic poses looking at the viewer in a powerful manner, as if he is looking at you and through you. His pupils are not colored in unlike his hair and clothes. His facial features are faintly drawn using pencil and kept gossamer thin, to almost relay the appearance of a specter or spirit. Even the raven perched atop his head bears the same design with its feathers and body in black though its eyes are white. I did this to mimic the same ethos in Poe and his work as if he and the raven are one, in spirit and appearance. Both share qualities of darkness, foreboding presences, and are visual icons of power and mystery within the picture frame all while being surrounded my mists of shadow and fog in the hues, tints, and shades of black around them. I designed this as an invitation from my favorite author and his companion atop his head as a welcoming piece to beckon the viewer to come into the world beyond the paper. A world full of shadows, mystery, and the unknown where Poe's eyes are both the entrance and exit gates of this macabre landscape.
