This piece is done via photo encaustic wherein an image is transferred to a prepared wooden board and then wax and pigments are used to enhance the image. I put many layers of pigmented melted wax down with a brush, fusing each to the layer below with a heat gun or a blowtorch. The classic Alice in Wonderland illustrations were copied onto tissue paper, embedded into the layers of pigmented wax, and then sealed in with more layers of clear molten wax on top. The result is a durable but luminescent surface.
Thinking surrealism, Alice in Wonderland is the ultimate surrealistic tale. And since this is the Year of the Rabbit, it seemed like an apt juxtaposition. Encaustics is the perfect medium to give a hazy, dreamlike quality to the images. While we are in such current unprecedented, unpredictable times, it seems best to give this "caution" early in the year and thus be prepared for the bizarre. Hence the Rabbit taking over Alice with attempt at resistance.
