My Chinese Auntie Eva left me a vintage Mahjong set made from hand-carved bone dove-tailed with a bottom layer of bamboo. There was a piece or two missing so it really couldn't be played with. [She also left me a modern plastic set that Mom & I play with.]
Anyway, that old set sat around for years before I decided I would make a collection of 8 Mahjong assemblages on canvas.
"Mahjong Woman with Hat" is small but mighty because not only does it have tulle from my wedding dress when it was made shorter, but there are vintage beads from Grandma's collection and odds and ends like carved bone fish and part of a jade bracelet.
I am not sure what the bone sticks with dots drilled on them are, included in the old Mahjong set, but maybe they were used to count with.
