This is not a drawing or painting but rather scratchboard. The scratchboard panel is a 1/8" thick board coated with a special white clay and a topcoat of black India ink. Using any sharp instrument, I scratch off the ink in various patterns to reveal the white clay and form an image. It is one of the most difficult art mediums because it is unforgiving if one makes a mistake. You can't erase or paint over an error. I used a few different tools to scratch this piece. My main tools were a #10 and #11 scalpel. I also used a fiberglass brush and the tip of a tattoo needle. I added color with acrylic ink washes.
My idea here was to depict Alice as a goth-like "bored with life" teenager. The characters she encountered in Wonderland are the alter ego of the ones were are more familiar with. Going clockwise around the piece is the Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat, White Rabbit, the Caterpillar, King of Hearts, Queen of Hearts, March Hare, and the Dormouse. Alice of course is in the center. I kept her black and white to make her stand out. I added small fillers of rough line images of background items from the original story. I wanted these fillers to look like they were drawn by a child.
