This piece is an original and one of a kind scratchboard artwork. This 19th century European artform is one of the most difficult and unforgiving art mediums around.
I wanted to maximize the use of negative (or black) space in this artwork. I love the way her head is turned upward. She is completely lost in the rhythm of the music. Her arms, torso, and legs are moving smoothly along with the drumbeats and bass. The emotion and energy release she feels right now is exhilarating. She is doing what she loves.
It is amazing how the negative space and minimal patterns of stippling and scratches tell the story. You do not see her legs but you know they are there. You can see a small hint of her bare feet. The texture of the cloth skirt comes through in the scratches.
