My series of paintings entitled "Flammable Florida" serve as a commentary on the delicate balance between nature's beauty and the looming threat of global warming. In the fashion of magic realism, plants protest in a fiery manner, and Florida's wild beauty serves as the perfect backdrop.
In this painting, Florida's natural splendor is on the brink of transformation, a result of unchecked environmental degradation. The mermaid can no longer reside in the once-majestic bayou, now reduced to a puddle. She is resilient however, determined not to be a creature out of place. She has her Airstream and her wading pool and is enjoying her early retirement. She is not only an ethereal beauty but an adaptable one. She gives us hope.
The once-beautiful cypress trees surrounding the bayou are not so resilient. They protest with sparks, a reminder of the precarious balance between progress and preservation.
Like the mermaid, we are all caught in the middle of a vanishing habitat.
