Yee haw giddy up! You don't need to buy a ticket to the Southwest, just pull up your armchair and gaze upon this little 3-D scene of life in the West. The sun is setting and our cowboy, dressed in his fancy parade best, is escorting the herd back home.
The figures are imported and hand painted by the German company Preiser, known for their fine detailing. The rest of the diorama is handmade, with some additions from Nature. The cacti have been crafted from pipe cleaners dipped in oil paint; others are molded from a high-grade modeling clay. The sparkling rocks are hematite, a gemstone mined in Africa. The watercolor sky is painted on archival paper. To avoid fading, do not hang in direct sunlight.
I was inspired to create this diorama after finding similar vintage dioramas made in the 1940's. They were originally used as educational devices. They were passed around the classroom and children were asked to memorize the names of the cacti and gemstones which were printed on the back side. Just so you know...Saguaro, Barrel and Prickly Pear. Now you can pass the test!
