We were never allowed to swear, you had to act like a "lady", whatever that meant. This lesson I learned at home. Acting like a "lady", I'd later learn outside of the home, also meant having no interest in sex. Women that enjoyed sex were "slutty". But you didn't even have to be having sex or enjoying sex to be deemed "slutty". Wearing a leopard print coat, virgin or not, in a see of grey NorthFace jackets would just as easily get you the title.
"Jane and Dick" is a play on words and imagery. There was no coincidence in the choice of "wholesome 50s imagery' paired with the text's not so subtle innuendo: ladies enjoy sex too.
Get that Dick, Jane.
