"The Lies We Tell Ourselves" is a piece of art created in response to Florida's controversial "Don't Say Gay" bill.
Growing up our grandparents would never quite come to terms with my uncle being gay. Although there was never a disownment or harsh words, true to the times, there was definitely a "don't ask, don't tell" mentality. My grandmother would actually tell people that the only reason her son hadn't married, was that there was no woman good enough for him... a lie she readily told others... as well as herself. In order to live his authentic, unfiltered life, my uncle wound up moving to the other side of the country.
Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill claims to protect families by giving parents "parental rights" in education. What the bill actually does though is rocket us back in time, stripping people of their identities (just like we used to)... essentially asking us to pretend that a whole subset of our population: our friends, families , neighbors, coworkers...are less than or don't exist.
In a country that touts personal freedoms, people should have the right to live unfiltered, authentic lives... and they should be able to do so safely in their communities, wherever they are. When everyone has a say in how they can live their own life, when everyone is treated with dignity and respect, when no one has to run or hide...all families can thrive (just as they are... right where they are... ).
