Flora photography is a passion of mine. The unique design and structure of flowers interest me and I actively seek out flowers that interest me.
This particular amaryllis lily is known as "Stargazer" due to its unique pattern and texture. While this flower is beautiful in its full color, I wanted to use a good contrasting black and white film to highlight the flowers structure, depth, and texture. With black and white photography, these things are what draw you to the subject since it is lacking color, these things must be emphasized.
This photo was taken in my humble home studio against a black background in darkness with only a single light source to illuminate the flower. This was shot on a Bronica EC-TL 6x6 medium format film camera with a 75mm f/2.8 lens. My favorite black and white film stock, Kodak Tri-X 400 was chosen for its sharpness, tonal range and depth.
