For a while now I've wanted to do a series of paintings showcasing the great oak trees and the Spanish moss draped from their massive branches here in the Tampa area. This park is just a short walk from my house and has some the most stunning trees!
I started this painting using a stick of charcoal on its side to sketch out the trunks and branches. Next was "burning in" that charcoal drawing with an umber oil paint, wiping away the highlighted moss with a rag. As I gradually built up the layers of color I made sure to save those light areas of the moss and bright green grass till the very final stages to make the canvas shine through.
