“Ascension” started with a simple idea of what a ride is. A ride that breaks the darkness of the night with glowing lights and transports riders above the ground. With a long exposure, riders become fading streaks of color and motion. The center of the Tower Ride remains still and bright. The contrast of control and chaos intrigued me. The design of the ride is solid, predictable, and mechanical, yet it is captured in the photograph as chaotic and alive. The ride is secondary. What intrigued me is the feeling that the ride gives. Speed, height, noise, light, and the fleeting feeling of being lifted into darkness. The photograph gives the familiar play of a ride a dreamlike idea. In motion, the play gives way to form, and memory is captured in color.
